Structural Analysis

The objective of structural analysis is to determine whether a building can safely support anticipated loading. Buildings are subjected to loading from many sources, including occupant activities, furnishings, snow and wind, soil pressure, and its own weight. A building’s structural members work to transfer the loading to the foundation. The Ontario Building Code prescribes solutions or design practices to select building components that will appropriately accommodate the loading.

The condition of building components can become compromised by various causes. Roofs may gradually deteriorate from prolonged exposure to outdoor elements or deferred maintenance. Wood materials may experience damage from moisture infiltration. Also, exterior masonry and foundations may be damaged by moisture infiltration and settlement. These conditions typically result in damage over an extended period. Other causes, such as tree impacts or fires, result in rapid loss-related damages. Building components may also become compromised by renovation activities, such as poorly placed holes made into wood beams or joists for plumbing or electrical lines.

Whenever an existing building is repaired or renovated, assessment of the foundation and framing is often limited due to interior finishes. Consequently, structural issues are often identified during repairs following a loss when it is discovered that structural work is needed to complete the restoration. These discoveries can lead to costly project delays and change orders.

  What we do?

  • Perform structural analysis of houses and small buildings.

  • Identify accessibility and safety concerns as a result of loss-related damage.

  • Prepare drawings for structural repairs and temporary supports.

  • Delineate pre-existing and loss-related structural damage.
